Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital Offers Low-Dose CT Screenings for Early Lung Cancer Detection
Tucson – Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital is strengthening its commitment to early cancer detection by offering low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung screenings, a proven method for identifying lung cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths nationwide, often because it is not diagnosed until symptoms appear at advanced stages. LDCT screening provides a proactive approach—detecting abnormalities before symptoms develop and significantly improving patient outcomes.
“At Carondelet St. Mary’s, we are dedicated to bringing advanced, preventive care to our community,” said Gustavo Gonzalez, MBA, ARRT(N), CNMT, CPXP, Director Imaging Services. “Low-dose CT screening allows us to detect lung cancer earlier, when treatment options are more effective and survival rates are higher.”
Who Should Consider Screening
Annual LDCT lung screening is recommended by the American Cancer Society for individuals who:
- Are between 50 and 80 years old
- Currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
- Have a 20 pack-year smoking history
Patients are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider to determine eligibility and discuss screening benefits.
Safe, Fast, and Effective
Low-dose CT scans use significantly less radiation than traditional CT imaging while still delivering high-quality images. The screening is:
- Non-invasive
- Completed in just a few minutes
- Requires no injections or special preparation
Advancing Community Health
By expanding access to LDCT screenings, Carondelet St. Mary’s aims to increase early detection rates and reduce lung cancer mortality across Southern Arizona. “Preventive care and early detection are key to improving long-term health outcomes,” added Gonzalez. “We want to ensure our community has access to lifesaving tools like lung cancer screening.”
